I thought the President’s comments were heartfelt and wonderful but they left me feeling sad that thousands of Americans die every day, thousands of individuals who have touched their communities, who leave behind loved ones, who leave behind perhaps more modest legacies, but ones that are valued nonetheless. These individuals’ deaths are not marked by media coverage, tweets, and webpages. They pass silently into the night. Perhaps we do not mourn the anonymous because it would break our hearts too often and too deeply to recover. Perhaps we do not mourn them because we cannot extend that much of ourselves. Today I am thinking about Steve Jobs’ family and the families of all the other unknown individuals who died today.
This made me cry into my bowl of cereal. I wish every kid got to have a mother like this one.
